Many people have been searching the internet for heartburn home remedies in recent times. Are there heartburn home remedies? If so, how effective are they? Before we get into the remedies, there are some questions that we need to ask.

    What is heartburn?

Heartburn is the most common symptom of gastroesophageal acid reflux disease (a.k.a. GERD, also known as acid reflux, acid indigestion and others. All of these terms will be used interchangeably on this page. Gastric acid (a.k.a. heartburn) is responsible for the burning sensation and pain that comes with it.

Gastric acid (a.k.a. heartburn) can cause pain in the chest, neck and throat. Acid reflux can also cause chronic cough, which can sometimes mimic asthma. Why is gastric acid being reabsorbed from the stomach back into the esophagus? It is caused by a problem in the cardiac sphincter (a.k.a. Hiatal hernia is often caused by a problem with the cardiac. The “cardiac-sphincter” has nothing to do the heart. Instead, the “cardiac” refers to the stomach.

    Take note

    • Biochemically: An esophageal pH monitor inserts a probe through the nose into the stomach to measure acidity near the cardiac sphincter. This method can detect acid reflux in real time.
    • Mechanically: A manometer is inserted into the mouth and into the esophagus to measure the pressure.

An endoscopy is another mechanical diagnosis. The doctor inserts a tube with a camera attached through the mouth to the stomach and esophagus. The doctor can see any signs of esophageal irritation due to acid excess using this method. If this is the case, the doctor may take a biopsy to examine the esophagus.

    Remember

Prevention is the best home remedy for heartburn. You don’t have to live with the terrible pain of heartburn if you can prevent it from happening. Here are some quick heartburn home remedies tips.

    • You should sleep with your head, neck, shoulders and stomach raised at least a little above your stomach. This will prevent excess stomach acid from travelling up into your esophagus.
    • Eat smaller meals, as more stomach acid can cause heartburn.
    • Avoiding certain foods such as coffee, fruit juices, onions, chocolates, spicy foods and pretzels, as well as tea and fatty foods is a good idea. can help reduce heartburn.
    • Avoid tight clothing around your abs.

    Home remedies

These are some heartburn home remedies that you can use to ease your pain once you feel it.

    • Antacids neutralize stomach acid. Although stomach acid can still reflux or splash into the esophagus occasionally, the pain will not be there as it is no longer acid. Although antacids can provide immediate relief, the relief lasts only about an hour.
    • Another option is to drink a small amount of baking soda and water. Baking soda (sodium carbonate) neutralizes acid in the same way as an antacid. However, too much sodium is not a good idea. This is not a permanent solution.
    • H2 receptor antagonists (or H2 blockers) are pills that reduce the body’s acid production. They are not intended to be used for immediate relief but rather as a preventative.
    • Alginates, which are made from brown seaweed, prevent acid from reversing into the esophagus. This provides a faster and more lasting relief than H2-receptor antagonists and antacids.
    • Protein pump inhibitors, (PPIs), are good for people who don’t react to antacids. PPIs block or inhibit the acid-production proteins, which control the acidity in the stomach. They allow the stomach to digest them. They provide long-lasting relief but are not quick-acting.
    • Following the diet guidelines as described under “Preventions”.
    • Other treatments as described above under “Preventions”.
    • Laparoscopic surgery can be performed on your esophagus in certain cases (which I do not recommend).
    • Chew gum. Chewing gum can reduce saliva production. Chewing gum can cause more saliva production. Because saliva is alkaline, it helps to neutralize acid. This makes it one of the best home remedies for heartburn.
