Chronic headaches or migraines are the most common complaints I see in my Acupuncture clinic. Acupressure can also be used at home. Although acupuncture is my preferred treatment for headaches (in my opinion), it is also very effective. These types of headaches can be caused by any number of organ systems, but the Gallbladder Meridian is almost always affected.

    Gallblader Meridian

The Gallbladder Meridian begins at the outer edge of your eye and travels upwards towards the back. It travels through the occipital area, and then it reaches the top of the shoulders at trapezius muscles’ peak. This is the area between the base and top of the shoulder joint. It is often tight for people suffering from chronic headaches.

The Gallbladder channel begins at the shoulder and continues down the body through the gluteal area, the lateral aspect both legs, and ends at fourth toe.

    TCM

Chinese Medicine places great importance on migraine and headaches. These organs are “paired”, and problems in one can affect the other. The treatment of one organ can also be used to treat the other. The top of the head is affected by the Liver channel. It can also cause pain behind the eyes. These two channels can work together to treat migraine and headache.

    • Start by sitting in a low-back or no-back chair. You can also use a coffee table or the floor.
    • Your partner should stand behind you, about 2-3 inches from touching your back to their chest.
    • Your partner will place your thumbs on the highest part of the trapezius muscles (this will be approximately midway between the base and shoulder joint).
    • After their thumbs are in place, your partner should push straight towards the ground with a moderate amount pressure. It is important to communicate with your partner. If you feel pressured, tell your partner. You will know when you have reached your limit. Although it shouldn’t hurt, you should feel some pressure on your muscle.
    • For 2-4 minutes, keep the pressure on the muscle.
    • Release and do the same as before. This should reduce the severity of a migraine or headache.
    • To avoid injury, please use caution and communicate clearly with your partner. You should not increase your pain. Your well-being is yours!
