Acid reflux, also known as GERD (Gastroesophangeal Reflux Disorder), is a common digestive condition that affects a large number. Acid reflux is caused by gastric acid (from the stomach) backing up into the esophagus (refluxes). Antacids and other prescription medications are often used to treat it.

    Take note

The FDA recently warned the public about the potential side effects of so-called pump inhibitors (such Prisolec and Nexium) that can increase the risk of fractures if used long term. This warning should be enough to remind those suffering from acid reflux to look into natural remedies and treatments that have been proven effective for many.

Here are the top natural remedies for heartburn and acid reflux.

    • Avoid eating and drinking foods that cause heartburn. Prevention is the key, as they say. These foods can either cause acid reflux or weaken the lower end esophageal.
    • Instead of eating three large meals, eat smaller meals. Keep your stomach full and not full. Large meals can fill up the stomach, which puts pressure on the esophagus muscles, causing it to splash the contents up into the esophagus.
    • Make some life-changing changes. Lose weight if you are overweight. Tobacco and smoking are not recommended. Finally, exercise regularly to reduce stress.
    • Aloe vera, apple cider vinegar, and baking soda are all home remedies for acid reflux. Mix 1-2 teaspoons of organic apple cider vinegar and 8 oz water. Take it when you feel heartburn. A teaspoon of baking soda mixed with 8 oz water can also be used. The healing properties of Aloe vera plant extract have been proven to be very effective in the form of capsules or juice.
    • After eating, chew gum for 30 minutes. This stimulates saliva production, which helps to flush out any esophagus content.
    • Acid reflux can be reduced by eating fruits like papaya, pineapple, and apples.
    • It is also possible to reduce symptoms with herbs like ginger root, bay leaves, chamomille flowers, and dill seed.
    • Avoid laying down immediately after eating a large meal or snack. This can put pressure on your stomach, which can lead to acid reflux in the esophagus.
    • Avoid strenuous exercise and any activity that requires stooping, bending or lifting your legs.
    • Avoid or minimize the use of medications that can irritate the linings of the stomach and esophagus. Anti-inflammatory drugs and iron supplements. Ask your doctor for more information.
